Star Trek fans were thrilled when it was announced that Michael Dorn, who played the iconic character Worf, would be returning to the franchise in the upcoming season of Picard. Dorn, who portrayed the Klingon in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, recently reflected on his surprise comeback in an interview with Digital Spy.
Dorn described the experience of reprising his role as Worf as a “very easy process.” He explained that he had a Zoom meeting with the producers, during which they exchanged ideas and discussed the direction they wanted to take the character in.
“The producers, we had a Zoom meeting together,” Dorn said. “And we really had an exchange of ideas… And they said, ‘Well, we think Worf should be that,’ and I would go, ‘That’s very interesting,’ you know, and so that was a real joy. Because you just don’t get that that much.”
While Dorn admitted that the makeup was always challenging, he said that the show had made it easier this time around. “I was surprised how easy I transitioned back in,” he added.
Dorn also spoke about Worf’s new look in Picard, revealing that he initially had reservations about the character having grey hair. “My little ego went, ‘I don’t want to be old,'” he said. However, he was ultimately convinced by the producers’ vision for the character.
“When I had the Zoom meeting with the producers, with Terry [Matalas] and Akiva [Goldsman], they said, ‘Well, I said, I want Worf to be this.’ And he said, ‘Well, we want Worf to be that.’ They said we want Worf to have grey hair. Like, everything’s grey. And then I thought of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, and that character Pai Mei, with the white hair… I mean, he could kill anybody.”
Dorn went on to say that he believed the new look worked perfectly for Worf, and fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the character on screen again.
Picard season 3 is currently in production, and while no official release date has been announced yet, fans are hoping to see it on their screens soon.
