A former US federal judge has cautioned Samantha Markle against continuing her legal case against her half-sister, Meghan Markle. The judge warned that Samantha could end up paying millions of dollars in legal fees if she loses the case.
Samantha has filed a longstanding defamation lawsuit against Meghan, claiming that she spread false and malicious lies about her. Meghan, in turn, has filed a motion to dismiss the case. If Meghan succeeds in dismissing the case, Samantha will have to pay her full legal fees.
The longer the case goes on, the more expensive it will become, potentially reaching millions of dollars. However, if the case goes past the motion to dismiss stage, Meghan will no longer be able to claim her legal fees from Samantha.
The former federal prosecutor believes that the case will go in Meghan’s favour, as the claims made against her do not appear to be grounds for a defamation lawsuit under US law. The judge has yet to decide whether a trial will go ahead, but has ordered the parties to mediation by the end of June.
